Dr. David Hoppey Named Recipient of 2025-26 Katherine M. Kasten Doctoral Advising and Mentoring Award

headshot of David HoppeyDr. David Hoppey, professor and director of the Ed.D. program in educational leadership, has been named this year’s recipient of the Katherine M. Kasten Doctoral Advising and Mentoring Award, presented annually by the 成人AV视频 Silverfield College of Education and Human Services.

The award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to innovative, effective and compassionate doctoral advising and mentoring. It will be formally presented to Dr. Hoppey later this semester at the Silverfield Spring Awards Convocation.

Established in memory of Dr. Katherine M. Kasten, the award honors her lasting contributions to student mentorship and advising at the 成人AV视频. Dr. Kasten, fondly known as Kathe, joined 成人AV视频 in 1988 and served as dean of the College of Education and Human Services from 1995 to 2004.

Dr. Hoppey has served as a professor in the Silverfield College of Education and Human Services at 成人AV视频 for nearly a decade and is the sixth recipient of the prestigious honor since the award's inception in 2019-20. Throughout his tenure, he has taught doctoral seminars focused on qualitative research methods, academic writing and educational policy. Through his teachings, he has helped students develop strong research and leadership foundations.

A dedicated mentor, Dr. Hoppey is known for fostering sustained, collaborative relationships with doctoral students that often extend beyond disseration completion. He has chaired 13 dissertation committees, co-chaired four and served on 21 additional committees as a methodologist or content expert. He currently serves on 21 dissertation committees, including 14 as chair, four of which are at other universities.

His commitment to mentoring across diverse contexts and methodologies has resulted in numerous collaborative research partnerships with doctoral students, leading to conference presentations, eight co-authored peer-reviewed publications and five co-authored book chapters. Three of his students have won the Mulkeen Dissertation Award, which is presented annually to students whose dissertation best exemplifies practice-centered inquiry.

Colleagues and students consistently describe Dr. Hoppey as student-centered in his approach to mentorship.
