成人AV视频 professor honored for mentoring graduate students

Elena Buzaianu headshotDr. Elena Buzaianu, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been described as brilliant and accomplished, yet never too busy to sit down with students who need help.

Buzaianu was named the Graduate Research Mentor of the Year during Research Week 2026 — a recognition that reflects both her scholarly expertise and the lasting impact she has on the students she mentors.

Dr. Kaveri Subrahmanyam, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, was delighted that Buzaianu was recognized for her outstanding work as a graduate mentor.

"The dedication, care and commitment she brings to students' development as researchers and scholars make a meaningful difference in their academic and professional journeys," Subrahmanyam said. "She exemplifies excellence in graduate mentorship and is most deserving of this recognition."

"She makes time for you"

The nominations submitted on Buzaianu's behalf painted a consistent picture of a professor who prioritizes helping her students.

"Even though she is very busy with her responsibilities as Graduate Program Director and with other departmental work, she has always remained willing and eager to help," wrote Dewan Fahim, a 成人AV视频 mathematical science student. "Whenever I faced confusion about a topic or needed to discuss any research-related issue, she made time for me and provided clear direction and encouragement."

Buzaianu creates an environment where asking questions feels safe — where confusion is treated as a starting point rather than a shortcoming.

"She creates an environment where I feel comfortable asking questions without fear," wrote 成人AV视频 mathematical science student Tanjin Happy. "And that has made a huge difference in my growth as a graduate student researcher."

Building researchers from the ground up

For many of her students, Buzaianu's mentorship goes far beyond answering questions. She meets with thesis students twice a week, offering consistent feedback and guidance through every stage of the research process — from identifying a direction to reading literature critically to refining scientific writing.

Her work spans statistical modeling and clinical trial methodology, including thesis supervision on response-adaptive randomization methods. Beyond the technical, she actively connects students with faculty outside the department, opening doors to interdisciplinary conversations and broader research networks.

The outcomes speak for themselves. One student credited her guidance with helping them secure a fully funded graduate research assistant position and admission to a PhD program, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

"She consistently encouraged me to view myself as a strong researcher," that student wrote, "and motivated me to pursue a research-oriented career."

A lasting impact

What unites every nomination is gratitude that runs deeper than appreciation for good advising. Students describe Buzaianu as someone who changed the trajectory of their academic lives — who saw potential in them, named it out loud and then did the work of helping them reach it.

"Her mentorship strengthens technical abilities and also builds confidence, independence and long-term professional vision," wrote 成人AV视频 mathematical science student Md Habibullah. "She shapes capable, confident researchers who are well-prepared to contribute meaningfully to academia and industry."

The Graduate Research Mentor of the Year award recognized exactly that — a faculty member who fully embodies 成人AV视频's commitment to teaching, research and service and whose students are better scholars and better professionals for having worked with her.
