³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ campus signThe ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ has once again been recognized for its sustained commitment to community partnership, earning the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement for the third time. ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ is among only 277 schools nationwide to earn this prestigious distinction, awarded by the American Council of Education (ACE) and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. 
 
“This recognition honors ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ’s strong ties to the Northeast Florida community and impact on enriching lives and fueling the state’s economic prosperity,” said ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ President Moez Limayem. “It is also aligned with the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ Strategic Plan goals of enhancing community engagement and expanding community partnerships.” 
 
The recognition reflects years of intentional work throughout ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ to integrate community engagement into teaching, learning, research and service in ways that are mutually beneficial for both the University and its partners.
 

³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ AI expert among speakers of TEDxJacksonville 2026

Dr. Josh GellersThe ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ will host the 2026 TEDxJacksonville conference, “On the Edge,” on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ Fine Arts Center’s Lazzara Performance Hall. This immersive one-day experience invites attendees to explore ideas that challenge boundaries and spark transformative conversations.
 
The conference features a dynamic lineup of speakers from diverse fields, each offering unique perspectives on pressing global and societal issues.
 
Among those speaking and making their TEDx Talk debut will be Dr. Josh Gellers, ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ’s Faculty Fellow for AI, director of the University’s Digital Humanities Institute and professor of political science. His talk will examine the evolving concept of rights for non-human entities — including artificial intelligence (AI), animals and nature — and advocate for a consistent ethical framework across all beings.

³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ Athletics announces new men's soccer head coach

³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ men's soccer head coach Marlon MontanellaMarlon Montanella becomes the fourth Head Coach in North Florida Men's Soccer program history, as announced by North Florida Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Nick Morrow last month.
 
Montanella has been on the Ospreys' staff as an assistant coach over the last two seasons playing a vital role in consecutive postseason runs in 2024 and 2025. North Florida comes off a historic season with a program-record 12-5-2 record that included nine shutouts and an undefeated mark at Hodges Stadium.
 
Before his time at North Florida, Montanella served as an assistant coach at the University of Bridgeport and helped the program to a 25-19-12 overall record and a 20-7-5 conference record.
 
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Montanella played at Young Harris College, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology. While at Young Harris, he helped the program secure 2016 and 2017 Peach Belt Conference Tournament titles and the 2017 NCAA Southeast Regional.

Students, CEOs and professionals from fields as varied as finance, health, technology and transportation are participating in the program. They represent more than 12,000 businesses, from startups to Fortune 500 companies throughout Northeast Florida.
 
Some of those who enrolled are learning how to apply AI at work, while others want to understand how to use AI at home or in their community service. Alumni-directed documentary film to debut at ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ

Attention Ospreys! Be the first to witness "Wright of Passage," a thrilling true story of adventure, legacy and resilience that follows filmmaker, pilot and ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ alum Lee Giat ('18) as he undertakes a two-month solo flight across South America.
 
Presented in partnership with the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ, the film will make its official debut at the newly renovated Andrew A. Robinson Jr. Theater on Saturday, Jan. 24. The world premiere event takes place from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Walk the red carpet, enjoy handcrafted cocktails and concessions.
 
There will be opportunities to connect with filmmakers, community leaders and special guests featured in the documentary.
 

Accessing Banner Services off network

Forticlient old and new logo displayed side by side³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ is asking all users who access Banner Services from off‑campus to make sure their FortiClient VPN is updated. Older versions of FortiClient — especially those with the red/orange icon — are no longer compatible and must be replaced with the newest version to avoid losing access.
 
You can quickly check your version by locating the FortiClient icon on your computer; if you see the older icon, you’ll need to uninstall it first, which requires administrator rights.
 
If you have the outdated version, are available in the ServiceNow Knowledge Base for installing the updated VPN client. Anyone who doesn’t have admin rights or needs help with installation can contact the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ Help Desk for support. Completing this update now will prevent future issues when trying to use Banner off the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ network.

New Digitalization Service at Thomas G. Carpenter Library

In January, the library began offering digitization services for ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ faculty and staff for materials held by the Allen Lastinger Center for Florida History, Special Collections & University Archives, and limited personal copies. In addition to standard equipment, the library possesses equipment to accommodate requests for 2D large-format materials and 35mm slides. A childhood fascination sparked by a science documentary set Valentina Bonilla Villalobos on a journey that now has the ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ junior exploring the origins of stars and their evolution. 
 
Today, the standout student, who is majoring in physics, is thriving in her classes and clubs. But research is where she’s really stood out, so much so that she was named the December 2025 “Undergraduate Researcher of the Month” by ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ’s Office of Undergraduate Research. 
 
Her research centers on astrophysics, with a particular emphasis on star formation and evolution. Throughout her time at ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ, Bonilla Villalobos has contributed to faculty-led research projects, presented at national and campus events, and taken on leadership roles that reflect her commitment to both science and community.

Fire Drills

As required by the State Fire Marshal and Florida Statutes, the Department of Environmental Health and Safety has been conducting fire evacuation drills in select buildings on campus with assistance from UPD, Physical Facilities and Building Emergency Coordinators. On Friday, Jan. 16, a fire drill will be randomly initiated at Buildings 39 and 39A.

CPR, First Aid and AED Certification

This course provides American Red Cross Adult First Aid and CPR/AED training for currently enrolled ³ÉÈËAVÊÓÆµ students, faculty and staff. The certification for CPR, First Aid and AED is valid for two years from the date of completion. Student Art Exhibit

The Reimagined Materials exhibition in the Thomas G. Carpenter Library is a collaboration between Special Collections & University Archives and the ART3930 ST Bookbinding class from the Art, Art History & Design Department. All the books displayed are crafted by students using scrap materials. Through upcycling and repurposing these materials, students create both traditional and non-traditional artists' books that explore their concepts in creative and environmentally friendly ways. The exhibition will be open during regular library hours through Jan. 31.

Dr. James Churilla, professor and graduate program director, and colleagues will be presenting their work ‘Lifestyle Medicine Score and Physical Function in U.S. Adults: 2007-2010 NHANES’ at the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Greenville, South Carolina in February 2026. Dr. Churilla and colleagues will also be presenting their work ‘Health Insurance Status and Lifestyle Medicine Score in U.S. Adults: 2007-2010 NHANES at the national American College of Sports Medicine meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah in May 2026.

Public Health

Dr. Sericea Stallings-Smith, associate professor, with MPH graduate Mariel German and collaborators from University of Florida, University of Tennessee and Mayo Clinic, published “Pairwise Comparisons of COVID-19 Infection and Smoking Behaviors on Subjective Cognitive Decline,” in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
 
Dr. Nishita (Nishi) Dsouza, assistant professor of social and behavior science, with co-authors Arthi Rao, Heather Wooten, Giselle Sebar, and Shoshanna Kasle, published a book chapter titled "Chapter 5 - Health Equity Impact Assessment: Current Models and Future Directions" in the textbook Health Equity: Strategies for Action.
 
Dr. Nishita (Nishi) Dsouza, assistant professor of social and behavior science, presented in Rome, Italy at the EoF Global Event: Restarting the Economy in November. Her plenary speech focused on livability, public health, and the economic benefits of investing in community-driven interventions.

Dr. Sandra Shapiro, assistant professor, received the Dozier Visiting Scholar grant from Ben Gurion University in Be'er Sheva, Israel.

College of Computing, Engineering and Construction

Dr. Pruthvi Manjunatha, assistant professor of civil engineering, presented research on paratransit operations and the use of advanced technologies at the 2026 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., January.

Silverfield College of Education and Human Services

Dr. Stephen Dittmore, Dean of the Silverfield College of Education and Human Services, was named one of three finalists as the Best Baseball Nonfiction Book of the Year by The Twin Bill Literary Magazine for his biography of Jim Gilliam.

Men's Tennis standout Andreas Scott Named 2026 ASUN Preseason Player of the Year

Graduate student Andreas Scott has been named the 2026 ASUN Preseason Player of the Year and to the 2026 Preseason All-ASUN Team as announced by the Atlantic Sun Conference earlier this month. Scott was named the 2025 ASUN Player of the Year after posting a 13-9 singles record highlighted by an 8-0 mark in ASUN play. Learn more .
